7/10 CRUSHED FUCKING SKULLS
This is a one-man death metal project from Romania that's remarkably well-played and well-composed. It reminds me just a little of early- to mid-period Death at times, and that's not a bad thing. I think it's the vocal cadence over some of the picking and melodic passages that give me that feel. Of course, this is just an influence showing through. The guitar solos are excellent, soaring over top the death metal when they appear. They're not throwaway solos, they have musical value, and they show the skill of the guitar playing. There is a brutal side to this band as well, and blastbeats are used sparingly but effectively to increase the violence of the music at appropriate times. The songs themselves are quite varied and are dynamic, sticking with the listener sometimes immediately. The production of the album is quite nice, very natural sounding, and doesn't give me ear fatigue while I listen. That is a huge plus. One thing that stuck out to me is the quality of the vocals, most of them being mid-range growls, but there is some experimentation here and there on the album as well with different styles. I really liked the dueling vocals at the beginning of "Necrophilicon." Overall, this is fairly unique music, and was definitely a nice change of pace to review.
