Gastrorrexis "Dominant Disease" (Review)

7/10 CRUSHED FUCKING SKULLS

This is the seventh full length of this venerable Ecuadorian act. They play fairly technical brutal death metal that focuses on speed and brutality. This is real brutal death metal with no current trendy garbage in it. The vocals are super-low gutturals without resorting to either pig squeals or any of the other weaker styles of coals. There are also clearly well-thought-out vocal patterns present and they let the music breathe by ceasing occasionally. They're very much in the Matti Way/Disgorge school. The production is perfect and natural sounding, not completely and overly loud like a lot of other bands. There are actual songs here, as well, not just collection of brutal riffs. There are plenty of nods to true death metal in the riffing - this is very much an old-school brutal death metal record. Recommended highly for fans of the style.

Necrogenesis "Desire for Murder" (Review)

9/10 CRUSHED FUCKING SKULLS

This is the second release and first full length for this Russian death mob. They're clearly heavily influenced by Cannibal Corpse, both in riffs and vocals, specifically the Barnes era. That doesn't detract from what is essentially a solid death metal record. Instead of whipping up into a blast all the time, we get killer breakdown after killer breakdown between the verses, each with monster grooves and great riffs. When this band does introduce a blast beat they hit you right in the face with it and then pound you with another heavy-ass breakdown. They're very skilled songwriters that know the power and value of a good hook. The more the album progresses the clearer it is to me that these are some damn fine musicians as well, with plenty of talent and technique. The drummers rolls and fills are superb and add a lot to the music on his own. If you don't mind something stylistically close to Cannibal Corpse that is nonetheless awesome, this is an album to track down.

General Fibrosis "Crossbreed Generation" (Review)

3/10 CRUSHED FUCKING SKULLS

All the staples are here: pristine production, (annoying fucking) bass drops, clear and crunchy guitars, heavy bass tone, lots of slams, and brutal vocals. But it's all for naught. This band has appropriated every trend in the brutal death metal scene right now, and could be called a stereotypical slam band. The one thing they do well is lean into their death metal side when they're not performing a slam riff. That part of their sound is different from the pack, but then it's right back into a typical slam at the first chance they get. Even the artwork has jumped on the recent trend of sci-fi album covers. I will say that they're genuinely talented musicians that are performing their chosen style perfectly, it's just not a style that I enjoy at all. When too much slam gets involved I tend to take a powder, because it's just not interesting at all, and that's exactly what I did with this one. Not for me. The bass drops alone get this one a low rating.

Disrupting "Conceive to Obliteration" (Review)

5/10 CRUSHED FUCKING SKULLS

This Brazilian death cult plays brutal death metal with a tinge of technicality. They focus on simpler, chunky riffs, but there are a lot of interesting little embellishments that enhance the music all over the place. There's interesting cymbal fills, bass playing that stands on its own and doesn't just follow the riff, and weird little guitar parts that are somewhat outside the norm for this style. Unfortunately, the songwriting could be better. The songs blend together quite a bit and get to be very similar sounding after a while, even with all the cool musical flourishes. The guitar solos in the songs that have them are interesting and offbeat. This band just doesn't seem to have enough to differentiate their songs, and some of that is a roadblock of this style of death metal (there's only so much you can do and remain brutal), but some of it is just a lack in the songwriting, plain and simple. I can't recommend this, but your mileage may vary if you like the brutal shit.

Rapid Fire Reviews (Corpse Worship, Monumental Discharge, Retching) (Review)

Corpse Worship Cemetery Anthems

2024 Coyote Records (CD)

These Russians are back with their third release and full length, and it's a solid effort. It's very much a European sounding record, instantly making me think of the Swedish masters of the early 1990's, but also a bit of Bolt Thrower. Some of the solos are quite musical and melodic, and that's a nice change from this style and how it's typically performed. There are some good riffs that will get your air guitar revved up. Get this if you're into this style, for sure.

Monumental Discharge Cesspit Earth

2024 Barbaric Brutality (Cassette)

This is slamming brutal death metal with a real fecal fetish, which makes me laugh, so points to them. Songs like Code Brown, Number 2 (the 2nd track no less), Fecal Apocalypse Response Team (F.A.R.T.), and Sentient Hemorrhoid tell you all you need to know about the lyrical content. The music has some seriously heavy slam riffs, with enough blasting sections to be not completely boring. These songs are short, which helps their case a lot. A handful of riffs and out. That's at least the way slam ought to be done. These songs have enough different riffs, so they hold my interest more than most slam-oriented bands. Some real death metal riffs are interspersed and make the songs different.

Retching Charming the Decomposed

2024 Independent (Digital)

This is some killer, badass death metal that blends styles into something interesting. I hear some Autopsy influence, as well as the early Swedish bands, but also the driving riffs of early Massacre, perhaps. I could be wrong, but that's what I'm hearing. This is evil-sounding, gore-fueled death metal that instantly grabs your attention and bangs your head with excellent riffs. There are quite a few sick samples relating to the songs, but they're not overly silly or off-topic, which is something that grates on me. The vocals are sick, a mix of raw-throated grunts and brutal death growls. This is really good shit, and if you're a death metal fan, you will not be disappointed. Go get this if you dig the sounds of the 1990's and even late 1980's.
