Liquid Flesh "Vestiges Abrutissants" (Review)

Liquid Flesh "Vestiges Abrutissants"

I hadn't encountered this fine French band yet on my travels in the now all-electronic (sadly) underground. I dearly miss written letters. Emails just sometimes aren't the same, but they're way faster, so I'll settle for that. Anyhow, when this promo showed up in my inbox, I was interested. The logo was different, the artwork was different, and eye-catching. And they have a killer name.

I was greeted, upon pressing play, with an amalgam of 1990s death metal sounds, and that is not a problem for me whatsoever. These gents have distilled their sound to the point where you can clearly hear some influences, but they're not jumping out and disturbing the listening experience at all. I can hear influence from Obituary to Cannibal Corpse to Entombed (they include a cover of a song by them) to Nunslaughter, as it relates to their riffs and bass work, to perhaps Malevolent Creation in the blastbeats. I could be wrong, of course, with listing some of those. It's just what my own ears hear! I like the fact that the music has very well-written songs, and focuses on hooks as well as the heaviness. This is the sort of death metal I prefer, and I'll be attempting to dig up this band's back catalog to check the rest of it out, since I like this so much. This isn't boundary breaking, this isn't innovative, this isn't surprising - it's fucking DEATH METAL. That's all I require to check out a record, and really I think that's what all true death metal fans want right now. Just bands that don't pull the rug out from under us with a weak-ass album. Much respect to the bands not wimping out today!

This CD is 5 tracks long, which seems like a go-to length for EPs these days, especially CD EPs. The mighty 7', once the backbone format for EPs, has become too expensive for its original purpose. You can pick it up directly from the band on their Bandcamp site. It'll be worth it, fuck the exchange rates!
