BADASS SONG TITLES: Shacked by Idolatry, Ascend This Harrowing Dream
Finally. A slamming brutal death metal band I can get behind. So much of the scene is stuck in chugs and pig squeals that I often don't give slam bands the time of day. I'm glad I did with this one. They stay away from a lot of what makes most slam fuckin' irritating - the pig squeals and the relentless use of the same exact slam riff as everyone else is using. That's not brutal. Dysentery is brutal. They mix it up and are decidedly more death metal in execution, leaning away from the slam riffs at just the right times. The vocals run the spectrum of guttural but the singer also uses proper growls, and he's sick as fuck, and powerful. Even though they use a ton of slam riffs, they keep it mixed up on this front also and don't become stagnant, often tossing in harmonics and sweeps to keep it interesting. They're not afraid to use blastbeats to break up their songs, either, and that sets them apart from a lot of straight slam death metal. They're clearly capable of technical playing, and some of that shines through in their execution. These guys can write a catchy fuckin' song, often building on repetition and slowly coming to a brutal climax in each track. I rely on Comatose to bring us these sorts of bands, to sort through the morass that is brutal death metal, and give us the cream of the crop. They definitely have here.
