New Standard Elite signs a particular kind of brutal death metal band, usually one that has the whole package. Guttural but varied vocals, technicality, heaviness, and speed. Squassation has that package and then some, and they put it to use by separating themselves from the pack in a very crowded and same-sounding market. Brutal death metal isn't about what new approaches a band can muster, but rather creating magic with the tools the genre lets you have, and Squassation have created that magic. Their musical skill is on full display, and their riffs sort of remind me of Gorgasm at times, but only fleetingly. The vocalist unleashes the full range of death metal vocals from growls to gutturals to screams, and thankfully stays away from the dumbass squeal shit. His performance is masterful. This is a brutal death metal clinic with speeding riffs, heavy breakdowns, relentless double bass, and fast-as-fuck blastbeats. It couldn't be done any better by one of the masters of the genre. I fully recommend this record. I have just one question - what the fuck is squassation?! That's a hell of a word.
